Drawing on frameworks developed at the federal level and real data from Nova Scotia museums participating as case studies, we’ll walk through practical approaches to collecting and presenting impact data \u2014 from operating expenditures and visitor spending to volunteerism, educational programming, and community partnerships. Museums know they need to have strong connections with their communities in order to be vibrant and sustainable, but oftentimes building those community connections can seem overwhelming or daunting. Our communities are evolving, their needs are changing, and the way people spend their leisure time is drastically different from how it was five years ago. Using the lessons learned in the Reconsidering Museums project and associated toolkit, as well as examples from museums, this workshop will explore how museums can communicate with their publics in ways that drives meaningful and sustained engagement that serves the needs of both the museum and the community. We will dive into how museums can step into new, and sometimes uncomfortable, situations to build bridges and fulfill their roles as community assets.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

When Lynette de Montreuil joined the DesBrisay in 2018, Town funding had been cut by 50% with the museum running a deficit and at significant risk of closure. By the end of 2019, programs had doubled, and attendance had almost tripled. This was made possible through partnerships and community engagement. Lynette will share her experiences that include positive wins, and valuable lessons learned.
