The association was pleased to receive nominations for both categories this year, and to be able to announce a winner in each.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past year, the dedicated work of the ANSM Board of Directors and Awards Committee members\u2014Chair Katie Tanner and members Lisa Wolfe, Peter Cullen, Debra McNabb, Joyce Rankin, and Matthew Cook\u2014along with the assistance of Executive Director Maggie MacIntyre, has made this year\u2019s awards presentations possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Award of Excellence in Museum Practices, Programming by an Organization recognizes an outstanding museum project within the past year. ANSM is pleased to present this award to the <a href=\"https:\/\/maritimemuseum.novascotia.ca\/\"><strong>Maritime Museum of the Atlantic<\/strong><\/a> for their \u201cTa\u2019n me\u2019j Tel-keknuo\u2019ltiek &#8211; How Unique we Still Are\u201d exhibit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following project summary is an excerpt from the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic\u2019s nomination:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exhibit, <\/span><b><i>Ta\u2019n me\u2019j Tel-keknuo\u2019ltiek <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illustrates the unique ways that the Mi\u2019kmaq continue to be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connected to the lands, and especially the waters, of Mi\u2019kma\u2019ki. The concept <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ta\u2019n me\u2019j Telkeknuo\u2019ltiek<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 \u201cthe unique way we continue to be\u201d\u2014 is used to show how the Mi\u2019kmaw people past and present are shaped by their deep and abiding relations to the place they sprouted from.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exhibit employs single-word concepts and first-person, multi-generational interviews (oral <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">histories), images and artifacts, to give a broad contextual understanding of the unique way the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mi\u2019kmaq continue to be. An emphasis on treaty relations is central to the concept and serves as a through-line connecting the exhibit\u2019s themes and narratives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Award of Excellence in Museum Practices, Individual Contribution acknowledges remarkable contributions by a museum professional (volunteer or paid) to a better knowledge of Nova Scotia\u2019s human or natural history. ANSM is pleased to present this award to <strong>John Tate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2038 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ansm.ns.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/John-Tate-Photo_ANSM-Nomination-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ansm.ns.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/John-Tate-Photo_ANSM-Nomination-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ansm.ns.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/John-Tate-Photo_ANSM-Nomination-500x400.jpg 500w, https:\/\/ansm.ns.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/John-Tate-Photo_ANSM-Nomination.jpg 505w, https:\/\/ansm.ns.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/John-Tate-Photo_ANSM-Nomination-400x320.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nJohn spent the first decade of his career with the Dartmouth Heritage Museum and later the Nova Scotia Museum in the late 1990s where he worked as a museum technician and preparator. He crafted models, mounts, exhibit components, and repaired just about everything.\u00a0 The following is an expert from his nomination:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[John Tate\u2019s] dedication, creativity and insightfulness in mount making, molding, casting and prop development for public programs demonstrates excellence in museum practice.
