Hello everyone! I’m Meredith Black and I’m a student in the Arts and Cultural Management program at MacEwan University. I’m originally from Southern
Ontario but have been living in Edmonton, Alberta for quite a while. I’m excited to be joining the Association of Nova Scotia Museums as a Digital Collections Assistant for the next two months, working remotely from Edmonton.
Since July of last year, I have been volunteering in collections management at the Royal Alberta Museum, where I work with the database and assist with Indigenous collections. Volunteering at the RAM was my first introduction to museum work, and it’s been really great. I’m happy to gain further museum experience with ANSM, and look forward to learning a lot during the internship. I love exploring the RAM here – the Death exhibit recently opened, which has been so interesting to check out. I’ve also visited some museums in Halifax, which were engaging and full of history, and I would love to return to explore more.
Before going back to school for Arts and Cultural Management, I completed a Sociology degree and Insurance & Risk Management diploma from MacEwan University. Following this, I worked as an underwriter in insurance for several years. I have always loved museums and arts and culture, so going into this field seemed like a perfect fit for me.
Outside of school, I work part time at the Roxy Theatre as a front of house/box office representative. I like to craft with friends, go for walks and hikes, go to museums, theatre, ballet and music shows, and enjoy photography. I’m looking forward to meeting and working with the ANSM team for the next two months!
