Building the Case: How Museums Can Measure and Communicate Their Impact
with Dnyanesh Kamat

Museums are essential to their communities — but making that case to funders, elected officials, and the public requires more than good stories. This session explores how museums can build an evidence base for advocacy by measuring their economic, social, and community impact. Drawing on frameworks developed at the federal level and real data from Nova Scotia museums participating as case studies, we’ll walk through practical approaches to collecting and presenting impact data — from operating expenditures and visitor spending to volunteerism, educational programming, and community partnerships. Participants will leave with a clearer sense of what to measure, how to gather the data, and how to translate it into a compelling case for support.

Wearing Another Hat: Fundraising in Museums
with Charles MacKenzie & Adam Langer

Working in a museum today often means balancing core responsibilities with the growing need to generate a growing amount of revenue, particularly as government funding becomes less predictable. For many museum professionals, fundraising is no longer optional, it’s becoming an essential part of sustaining programs, collections, and community impact. At the same time, it’s being added to an already full workload, without dedicated development staff or additional support.

This practical and encouraging session is designed for museum professionals who are navigating this shift and finding themselves fundraising “off the side of their desk.” Through real-life examples and low-lift strategies, the session will help reframe fundraising as a natural extension of your purpose and public service role. You’ll learn how to make the most of the time and tools you already have, build donor relationships in an authentic and comfortable way, and identify funding opportunities that align with your organization’s scale and strengths. Whether it’s strengthening your case for support, making better use of everyday communications, or turning existing work into funding opportunities, you’ll leave with practical steps you can take right away.

This webinar will walk you through the practical, day-to-day strategies the Creston Museum is implementing to manage the upcoming succession of their own beloved long-term CEO. You can pass that torch – without burning anything down.

Communicating with Community
with Meaghan Patterson, Royal Alberta Museum

Museums know they need to have strong connections with their communities in order to be vibrant and sustainable, but oftentimes building those community connections can seem overwhelming or daunting. Our communities are evolving, their needs are changing, and the way people spend their leisure time is drastically different from how it was five years ago. Using the lessons learned in the Reconsidering Museums project and associated toolkit, as well as examples from museums, this workshop will explore how museums can communicate with their publics in ways that drives meaningful and sustained engagement that serves the needs of both the museum and the community. We will dive into how museums can step into new, and sometimes uncomfortable, situations to build bridges and fulfill their roles as community assets.

Interactivity: powerful but…
with Adam Fine, Fathom Studios

Join us for an exploration of interactivity in exhibits.
Almost every museum curator wants their exhibits to be more “interactive”, but the word is broad and trendy, often meaning anything from augmented reality, to touchscreens, to mechanicals, to hiring human re-enactors. Interactives of all kinds can increase your visitor engagement, but each choice introduces new challenges—in design, facility management, maintenance, accessibility, and other areas. This session will talk about the main classes of interactivity and discuss the costs and benefits of each, and how such choices might benefit the museum.
